118 years ago William Morgan invented volleyball as a way of unwinding for the American youth in Massachusetts.
Half a century later, in 1947, Romania became one of the founding members of the International Federation of Volleyball (F.I.B.V) and of the European Committee of Volleyball, two sports organisations that nowadays are the greatest international forums, having more than 220 international federations affiliated to F.I.V.B. and presiding five continental confederations: AVC (Asia), CAVB (Africa), CEV (Europe), CSV (South America) and NORCECA (Central and North America).
This worldwide impetuous development of volleyball is the natural consequence of its characteristics, essence and impressiveness, all emphasised by the players, coaches, referees, sponsors etc.
Romania, which is no longer at the top of either European or global volleyball, struggles constantly to catch up, to arise from its ashes like a Phoenix.
By the means of these lines, the author briefly describe our volleyball players’ major international participations in the European Championship, the World Championship, the Olympic Games and the European Cup, together with the record of our most representative teams from their beginnings until present time.
